Kelly's Book Log: THE WARS by Timothy Findley

Robert was riding along the tracks behind a hundred and thirty horses

with the dog trotting beside him.

Tiff as they called him, was my first writing mentor through the Humber School of Writers program in Toronto. He helped me get my first book, Mad Dog, published and I am eternally grateful to him. I read his Governor General’s Award-winning book The Wars many years ago. I reread it this week and appreciated even more this time how brilliant and beautifully written it is. It’s about a young soldier in WW1 who commits a humane yet treasonous act. The prose is spare and elegant. Well worth reading and rereading in these difficult times. R.I.P Tiff.
