I squat there and think about how you get trained early on as a woman to perceive how others are perceiving you, at the great expense of what you yourself are feeling about them. Sometimes you mix the two up in a terrible tangle that’s hard to unravel.

― Lily King

It’s June and I’m thinking of romance, and fun, chatty, lighter sorts of books. A friend gave me this book as a birthday gift. We’re both writers and often share our favourite reads with each other. It’s kind of a bookclub of two. I loved Lily King’s prose and was touched by this novel about a lost soul choosing between two loves and trying to forge a life as a writer. She is a waitress, and I too was a waitress for many years. The book is about not giving up on your dreams, something that can get harder and harder not to do, especially as one slides into the later decades of a life. Writers and Lovers also has a feminist tilt, which I appreciated. But at its core it’s a story about love—romantic love and love of writing and books. Things close to my heart. Thank you, Denise Roig for suggesting this one.
