“To be in love was to understand how alone one had been before.”
--Chris Cleave, Everyone Brave is Forgiven
Until I read this book, I’d forgotten why I like English writers so much. They tend to have more extensive vocabularies, their plots are less predictable and their characters often more complex. I loved the characters in this WW II book, based on Cleave’s own grandparents and their time during the London Blitz. The three main characters are tossed into chaos by sudden war, fall in love and struggle to find their purpose within this global catastrophe. They make mistakes, they are wounded. There is no candy coating or romanticization of trauma or heroism or war. It was a moving and very realistic read. Definitely a great addition to my WW II collection of favourites. #fridayreads
